Tim McLoughlin asked:

An average homeowner’s education never ends–this is especially true for first time homeowners. For the very handy among us, building terms, types of repairs and an understanding of how to locate wall studs seems to have been ingrained from birth. For a homeowner with less repair experience, each and every necessary repair comes with a sense of urgency to learn how to fix it.

New Homeowners and Home Repair Crash Courses:

It’s typical for crash courses in plumbing and electrical work to occur fairly early during the time a first time homeowner takes ownership of his home. Other big repairs, thankfully, don’t come up as often. While this is easier on the wallet, it also delays the homeowner’s education on various aspects of their homes. Roofing is one such area.

While it’s impossible not to notice if the plumbing works as you turn on a faucet, or if the electricity is running when you flick a light switch, whether or not you have a healthy roof is something that’s considered less frequently. Along these lines, it’s logical that the first time a homeowner really thinks about their roof will be because there is a problem that has arisen.

Take a roof leak as an example. Once the homeowner notices a wet and buckled ceiling, they can get ready for that crash course in roofing, because at the very least, a roof repair is in order. Peel back a few extra layers of the source of the problem and many times the homeowner discovers the inevitable, the roof has begun to fail and a new roof is in order. When this happens, be prepared to bring in a professional for an opinion.

- Did you know: Most asphalt shingle roofs are designed to last for 30 years. The roof’s expected life can be shortened if the roof is exposed to heavy winds or becomes a victim of roof hail damage.

Professional Roof Repair Contracts Assess the Roof:

As a roof repair contractor is brought out to examine the roof and identify the problem area, roofing terms will start flying. Think of this as the vocabulary section of your crash course in roofing, and ask about as many of the unfamiliar terms as you can. Writing some of the terms down to research later is also a good idea; in the long run, your new roofing knowledge could be helpful.

To get you started, here are a few common roof terms used by roofing contractors that could be confusing for the average homeowner, and could have contributed to a common roofing problem:

Cricket: A wood-framed structure that diverts water away from chimneys, walls or other vertical roof projections and penetrations; also called a saddle.

Flashing: Metal or other flexible material used to seal the roof and prevent leaks around any projection or intersection, such as pipes, chimneys, dormers, valleys or adjoining walls.

Plumbing boot: A prefabricated covering, usually of flexible material, used to seal around a penetration; also called a pipe boot or roof jack.

By the time a roofing contractor has climbed up and looked around the roof, he’ll be ready to make a recommendation on how to best fix the problem. In the case of a leak, perhaps that flashing can be repaired, making the roof watertight once again. If a small fix won’t solve the problem or if the roof is near or over 30 years old, it might be time for a roof replacement. In that case, get ready for many more vocab words, because the crash course isn’t over yet! Before you know it, you’ll be able to discuss the pros and cons of different roofing materials and methods with any roofing contractor.

October 24, 2008 — EZ Roof LLC announces a price reduction for homeowners considering a new roof or siding project. Company owner Fernanda Pimentel expressed concern that homeowners might elect to forgo these repairs in the face of current economic hardships. Pimentel stated that “electing to put off these types of repairs may cause additional depreciation to their most important asset, due to continued water and wind damage.” The Atlanta roofing experts announce that they have agreed to a ten-percent reduction in labor charges for customers in the Atlanta area in order to encourage investment in their property, and to balance the rising cost of materials.

In the face of a downturn in the US economy and withering personal savings, many homeowners are simply putting off major home repairs such as roofing, painting or siding, in an effort to pay the monthly bills.

electing to put off these types of repairs may cause additional depreciation to their most important asset, due to continued water and wind damage. As Atlanta home prices have declined an estimated 8% over the last year, and new home builders have pulled back from putting more homes on the market, homeowners will be remaining in their current residences for longer periods of time and will be required to invest in roof repair , siding and shingles, gutter maintenance and painting. Completing these projects before structural damage can occur will ensure maximum resale value in the future.

Homeowners interested in taking advantage of this home repair savings should contact Pimentel by visiting the web site at http://ez-roof.com and on the estimate request page indicate they are interested in a project reduction. This promotion is valid for projects started prior to December 31, 2008.

About EZ-Roof LLC:

EZ Roof is a full-service roofing solutions company based in Atlanta, Georgia that provides residential and commercial roofing, as well as gutters, soffit and fascia, siding, insulation and painting services.

Services

EZ Roof offers a full range of services for roofing installation and renovation.
Dale Seiler asked:

The roofs of our homes could quite easily be considered the most important part of our homes too. Often times we take for granted the protection and security our roofs offer until a problem arises, but once the problem is present it consumes our thoughts. It is important to be aware of a huge enemy to our roofs, hail. Being educated on the signs of hail damage, and the actions to take if hail damage is present can be a big time and money saver.

While some companies may advertise that their roofing methods are hail proof, experts agree that there is no such thing as a hail proof roof. Some types of roofs are more or less resistant to hail, but there is no such thing as a roof that is 100% immune to hail damage. One of the most common types of residential roofing materials, composite or asphalt shingles, can be damaged by hail, and homeowners should learn how to detect hail damage.

Before you and your home have to go through a hail storm you should be conscious of your insurance policy on hail damage. Different insurance companies have different lengths of time in which they allow you to make your insurance claim. It is always the best idea to make the claim immediately and not hold back. Another difference between insurance companies is the scales in which they use to determine if the hail damage is significant enough to need repair. Know this information beforehand and keep it in mind if your home has suffered damage.

Asphalt shingles often times are hard for people to detect hail damage. A common miss-belief people have is that if there are no shingles missing there is no damage. This is not the case though. High wind is what causing missing shingles while damage from hail is harder to see.

Pay attention during the storm, and if you believe the storm caused any damage to your house take pictures while hail is still on the ground. Having the date present on the photograph can be useful. You should also include a picture of you entire roof in one shot. Never throw these pictures away even if you feel like no damage actually occurred. If problems come up later from the storm, these pictures will be helpful.

Before you begin a thorough inspection of your roof and gutters, give it enough time to completely dry. A big sign of a worn or damage roof is asphalt granules building up where gutters drain. Be on the look out for weathered areas on your roof and photograph these also.

Once you find evidence of hail damage in the form of weathered hailstone size spots on your shingles, it is time to get a professional opinion concerning detecting and repairing hail to roofs. Many roofing companies offer free inspections. A homeowner can combine a professional’s inspection report with the photographs and submit the material to an insurance company.

Dan Netko has been assisting people handle hail damage for the last thirty years. Find out how he can assist you completely with your insurance claims, roofing repairs and hail damage repairs today.
