lee w asked:
Does anyone have any intelligent tips on what may make a new house roof cheaper? Eg: type of materials, pitch (is one pitch cheaper than others??), style (gable v skillion??)
And any other tips to make construction cheaper would be great too. Cheers.

The steeper the pitch, the more material that will be used. Asphalt shingles will be the cheapest, but will also be needing replacement in about 20-30 years. A hipped roof will use less roofing materials, but will require additional framing costs.
If you are working with an architect, you can ask them for their advice.

The cheapest roof is a metal roof. Lots of new construction using metal roofs. The savings is in the fact plywood isnt used beneath these only slats of 1 x 2 every foot and across. These are very good roofs and come in a variety of colors.

The least expensive roof system for a new house is this: engineered roof trusses on a 4/12 pitch, covered with 7/16 inch OSB, 15 pound felt paper and 20-year 3-tab shingles.

Turnhog is correct except that I would not use less than 1/2″ osb.
