Giovanni Rueda asked:

Earthquakes, fires, floods, tornados…all God’s way of reminding us that we live on an Earth that’s alive and dynamic. But for us homeowners, natural disasters can be (at the minimum) severe on our finances. This is why we always need to be aware of our surroundings, protect as much as we can, and follow the best process of damage control in case things do happen.

While any natural occurance can be costly, there’s perhaps none more destructive than hail damage. It’s estimated that property damage through hail in 2007 exceeded $10 billion in the United States alone.

Here are 5 steps you can take after-the-fact to deal with hail damage:

1. Assess the damage

Instead of getting up on the roof (you don’t want to cause more damage to yourself or the roof by walking on it), look around at the foliage in the yard (trees, shrubs, etc.). Have they been damaged? This can be a good, soft indicator of what happened on the roof. Another source are your vehicles. Any damage there? If you have frame damage on your car, then you’ll probably find damage on the roof as well.

2. Limit any further damage.

There are two waves of damage through hail. The first is the frame damage where the hail has punctured shingles, glass, etc. The second wave of damage is through water making it’s way through the damage and reaking further havoc. Seal up damaged areas where water might penetrate. This includes shingles, sky lights, etc. Also, this is a good time to document the damage through pictures. Take some shots (most cell phones have cameras in them now) so that you can provide them to the insurance company.

3. Call your insurance agent and file the claim.

Insurance companies are fully aware of potential hail damage and practically all homeowners policies cover the possibility, either full or in part. (You really need to review your policy once a year nonetheless to make sure you’re properly covered.) Don’t wait on the issue…notify your agent immediately and provide a written explanation along with pictures of the damage.

4. Select a reputable roofing company.

Finding a good roofing company can be a challenging task. Most are honest, but there are some (known as storm chasers) who are really more interested in the money than a job well done.) I recommend you go with someone who has experience and a base of happy customers. At the minimum, you need to make sure they have workers compensation and liability insurance. If not, you may be held liable if one of their workers is injured or if they damage a neighbor’s property.

5. Choose hail resistant roofing materials.

Thankfully, we live in a time of high-technology and plenty of options. Roofing manufacturers produce hail resistant materials as a standard offering that are attractive and affordable. They are rated based on the hail damage potential from 1 (offering least resistance) to 4 (most). Discuss the best option with your insurance agent.

Following these steps is a good way of not only limiting the damage (as gracefully as possible), but limiting the effects should there be another hail storm in the future…and true me, there will be.

Harry Golden asked:

If the body’s first line of defense is the skin, our house’s first line of defense is the roof. Of all the part of the house, it is the roof that sustains the maximum damage. Unfortunately, in Atlanta GA, things become much worst. Because of the harsh weather conditions in the area, Atlanta roofs need to be sturdy and made from quality materials. The good side to this, however, is that a number of roofing companies can be found nearby.

Some of the usual problems that Atlanta roofers face include hail-damaged roofs, shingles that are ready to give way, clogged drain pipe, and rust. A good Atlanta roofer would be able to discuss with you what needs to be done in each situation as well as how long the job would take.

Unfortunately, because of the number of competition in the market, some neophyte roofers would do different strategies in order to get a client, one of which is by indulging in a bit of a roofing jargon. This leaves you trusting them since they seem to know what they are talking about. Unfortunately, some of them just know the talk and cannot actually walk the walk. This is the reason why you should familiarize yourself with the different roofing terms.

Some of the Atlanta roofing terms that you should be familiar with includes gabled and hipped. Basically, these two terms denote the roof style. A gabled roof is one that where the roof falls into a slope down to the sides forming a triangle in the process. The overhanging part of the roof formed by this style is known as the rake. Gabled roofs can e further subdivided into front-gabled, side-gabled, and cross-gabled.

You might find a number of roofing in Atlanta that does not form a triangle. These are known as hipped roofs. The overhanging edge formed by this roof style is known as eaves. Hipped roofs can be further categorized into simple hipped and cross-hipped, among others.

Knowing these terms can help you better understand roofers. Now you won’t have to worry about speaking with anyone engaged in roofing Atlanta GA can offer.

Groshan Fabiola asked:

If you live in an area where hails are something common, you must be aware of the fact that there will come a time when you will need some serious roof repairs or even a roof replacement. Time is also a defining factor in the amount of damage that your roof can handle. Like many other things, roofs deteriorate in time, but unfortunately there are some additional factors which make the process of deterioration even faster. Such factors include the unavoidable exposure to sun, rain, wind, snow, and so forth. Most roofs are made to last, but none of them will last a lifetime. If you’re lucky, the consequences of a serious hail will only be some roof repairs. But for many people, re-roofing is the only solution.

There’s nothing like the sense of pride and fulfillment that you get from doing something difficult on your own, without professional help, especially when it comes to your home. However, roof repairs or re-roofing does not exactly fit into the do-it-yourself category. The recommendation in such cases is that you turn to the services provided by roofing contractors.

Roofing contractors are professionals who will help you in all the aspects related to roof repairs of re-roofing. But you as a consumer have an important part in this project, as you have to take some important steps in ensuring that the final outcome of the process is just as you imagined it would be. Roofing contractors have to meet some requirements, which you have to check out. First of all, make sure that they are registered or certified. There must be a roofing contractors association in your state or region, where you can verify if the roofing contractor you have chosen is certified or not. Insurance for roofing contractors is also a must, so make sure you don’t omit this aspect. A handshake would have been enough once, but now certainty comes with a written and signed contract. However, before you sign anything, you should get some written estimates of your project from at least three different roofing contractors in your area, all based on the same materials that you have chosen for your roof repairs or re-roofing process. If the roofing contractor you have selected has prior experience in your area, you should also check out some of their previously completed projects, so that you can get a good idea of how they work. Talking to the owners who have been the roofing contractor’s clients might shed some light on how they deal will possible problems or complaints, or how they have handled issues during the entire job. In order to get the job done, the roofing contractor will need access to your home, and the question of trust arises. Of course, you must check the roofing contractor’s phone number, address and references, but it wouldn’t hurt to get an honest, unbiased opinion from someone who has been their client before you.

Should you ask for written estimates from different roofing contractors, you’ll find that there may be some differences among these bids. Study them thoroughly and try to understand these differences, because the most expensive project doesn’t have to be the best for what you need, but then again you shouldn’t jump at the cheapest one, which may turn out to be not so great, to say the least.

Keep in mind that there are many roofing contractors, and regardless of the complexity of your project, whether it’s just some roof repairs or a more serious re-roofing, you need the guarantee of a well carried out job at reasonable costs. Certified roofing contractors who do everything by the book are the answer for you.

For more information related with Roof Repairs and even about subjects like Roofing Contractors please visit this website http://www.MAKRoofing.com
